Welcome to Your Journey into the Persian Language!
Hello, language enthusiasts! Persian is a language that’s been alive for thousands of years, woven with poetry and stories. I’ve always loved its flowing script and warm sounds, and I’m excited to share its journey with you. Let’s dive into where it began and why it still shines today.
Origins of Persian
Persian, or Farsi, traces back to ancient Persia as part of the Indo-Iranian family. Old Persian (circa 6th century BCE) echoed through the Achaemenid Empire, carved in cuneiform—like "سلام" (salaam, meaning hello) on ancient stones. Middle Persian (circa 3rd century CE) grew during the Sassanian Empire, written in an Aramaic-based script, leaving traces in Zoroastrian texts.
Modern Persian
By the 9th century CE, after the Arab conquest, Persian adopted the Arabic script and words like "کتاب" (ketaab, book). This was when poets like Rumi and Hafez turned it into a treasure of art. Today, you’ll hear Farsi in Iran, Dari in Afghanistan, and Tajik in Tajikistan; different voices sharing the same soul.
Persian Today
Spoken by over 110 million people across Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, Persian shapes their cultures. It’s touched Urdu, Turkish, and Arabic, carrying poetry, music, and traditions like Nowruz. To me, it’s a language that feels like opening a window to a new world—one letter at a time. Join the Conversation! What draws you to Persian; its sound, its script, or its stories?
